What is the difference between KYC, KYB and EDD?

KYC

Know Your Customer

KYC verifies the identity and relevant information of the individuals associated with an account — including beneficial owners, directors and authorised users where applicable. Typical evidence is a valid government-issued photo ID and, where required, proof of residential address.

Read the detail
KYB

Know Your Business

KYB verifies the legal existence, ownership, activities, banking relationships, regulatory status and intended transaction activity of the business itself — from the certificate of incorporation through to the expected payment corridors.

EDD

Enhanced Due Diligence

EDD is an additional level of review that may be required where the customer, ownership, business activity, jurisdiction or transaction profile presents elevated risk. It usually involves Source of Funds, Source of Wealth and further supporting documentation.

What do we need to verify your business?

Eight categories cover a standard KeyBS Pay business application, following the KeyBS Pay KYB/KYC Business Account Opening Checklist (Version 1.0 · August 2026). Prepare these before you start — most delays come from missing ownership information or unreadable documents, not from the review itself.

KeyBS Pay may request additional information depending on risk profile, business activity, jurisdiction or transaction profile. Not every document will apply to every applicant — the team will advise if further information is needed.

Who counts as a beneficial owner?

KeyBS Pay identifies and verifies every Ultimate Beneficial Owner holding 25% or more of the entity — directly or through intermediate companies — together with persons exercising significant control through other means. Where a corporate shareholder sits in the chain, verification looks through to its own beneficial owners.

Example Global Trading Ltd
Alex Morgan
Individual UBO — verification required
Example Holdings Ltd
Corporate owner — look-through to its UBOs

KeyBS Pay requests identification and ownership information for beneficial owners holding 25% or more, together with relevant control-person information.

What is Source of Funds verification?

Source of Funds (SoF) refers to the origins of money that an organisation uses to finance its operations.

If no business activity, or information supporting business activity, is evident, KeyBS Pay may require further information and supporting documentation. Examples of possible supporting documents:

Business bank statementsAudited or management accountsContractsCustomer invoicesSupplier invoicesInvestment documentationSale agreementsTax filingsOther supporting financial evidence

These are examples — not every document will be accepted in every case.

What is Source of Wealth verification?

Source of Wealth (SoW) refers to the origins of a client’s entire body of wealth (total assets) — establishing why the client has the assets they do and how they came to accumulate them.

Where the client has been trading, KeyBS Pay would expect accounts or corporate tax statements dated from the previous year. If this is not possible, the review can extend to the UBO of the entity, requiring documentation supporting their financial input into the business.

Where appropriate, KeyBS Pay may request documentation such as:

Annual accountsCorporate tax filingsInvestment evidenceSale-of-business documentationProperty sale recordsDividend evidenceEmployment or business income evidenceRelevant UBO financial evidence

When can Enhanced Due Diligence be required?

Under the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite 2026, Source of Funds and Source of Wealth documentation is required if any one of the following applies:

High-risk industry

The business operates in an industry classified by KeyBS Pay as high risk (see the list below).

PEP, or connected to a PEP

The customer or a relevant person is a Politically Exposed Person, or is connected to a PEP.

Incorporated in a high-risk jurisdiction

The entity is incorporated in a jurisdiction classified as high risk under the Customer Risk Appetite.

Operating in a high-risk jurisdiction

The entity is operating in a jurisdiction classified as high risk under the Customer Risk Appetite.

UBO residence in a high-risk jurisdiction

A beneficial owner holding over 25% resides in a jurisdiction classified as high risk.

Beneficial owner aged 25 or younger

A beneficial owner holding over 25% who is 25 years old or younger.

Enhanced review does not automatically mean an application will be declined. It means additional information may be necessary to understand the customer and transaction profile.

What is the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite?

Not every business or payment activity falls within KeyBS Pay's risk appetite. Eligibility depends on business activity, ownership, licensing, jurisdiction, expected transaction flows and other compliance considerations.

Standard Verification

Normal KYC / KYB onboarding and verification applies.

High Risk / Enhanced Review Required

Source of Funds, Source of Wealth and additional Enhanced Due Diligence documentation may be requested. High-risk classification does not by itself mean the business is prohibited.

Prohibited / Outside Risk Appetite

Industries, activities and blacklisted jurisdictions outside the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite cannot be onboarded.

Prohibited / Outside Risk Appetite

Which activities are outside our current risk appetite?

Under the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite 2026 (KBP-RISK-01 · Version 1.0), the following industries and activities are prohibited from opening a KeyBS Pay account:

Nested payments as an activity*Unregulated entities conducting activities that require licensingArms and DefensePolitical organizations / Government-related activitiesPonzi / pyramid schemesFirms servicing illegal goods/services — including counterfeit goods / trademark infringement, human trafficking, child labor and prostitutionMining and quarryingFinancial services speculative trading (derivatives trading platforms)Dedicated adult entertainmentDatingChat and messaging servicesHolding companiesShell companies

This list reflects the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite 2026 (KBP-RISK-01, Version 1.0) and may be updated as KeyBS Pay’s risk appetite, partner requirements and applicable regulatory obligations evolve.

High Risk / Enhanced Review Required

Which industries require Source of Wealth and Source of Funds?

High-risk classification does not by itself mean the business is prohibited. Additional Source of Funds, Source of Wealth and Enhanced Due Diligence requirements may apply.

How does jurisdiction risk affect onboarding?

Blacklisted jurisdictions

KeyBS Pay maintains a blacklist of jurisdictions where onboarding is prohibited. Onboarding is prohibited if any of the following applies:

  • The entity is incorporated in a blacklisted jurisdiction
  • The entity operates from a blacklisted jurisdiction
  • Any UBO resides in a blacklisted jurisdiction

High-risk jurisdictions

Onboarding may proceed, but Source of Funds, Source of Wealth and enhanced due diligence requirements can apply — where the entity is incorporated or operating in a high-risk jurisdiction, or where a beneficial owner holding over 25% resides in one.

Please note: Jurisdiction classifications can change. Applicants should rely on the most current information provided during onboarding rather than using this webpage as a guarantee of eligibility.

The applicable jurisdiction classifications are maintained in the KeyBS Pay Customer Risk Appetite 2026 (KBP-RISK-01 · Version 1.0) and confirmed during onboarding. This page describes KeyBS Pay's own risk appetite, not any external list.

What are nested payments?

Nested payments involve providing payment, account or safeguarding services to underlying customers of the account holder without KeyBS Pay's prior written approval and full look-through transparency.

Platforms, marketplaces, fintechs and other intermediaries should describe their complete customer and funds flow during onboarding. This matters especially for API customers.

What do API and platform customers need for KYC and KYB?

Platforms integrating the KeyBS Pay API — marketplaces, fintechs, payroll providers and payout platforms — may be asked to provide:

Corporate KYBOwnership / control informationLicences where applicableFull funds flowCustomer typesBeneficiary typesCountriesCurrenciesTransaction volumeAverage transaction valueKYC/KYB frameworkAML controlsTransaction-monitoring frameworkSanctions screening approachBusiness modelTerms of serviceWebsite / applicationSource of Funds informationPartner / banking relationships where relevant

The required compliance structure depends on the proposed service, funds flow, jurisdictions, beneficiaries and regulatory model.

Discuss Your API Use Case

Example: marketplace or creator payout platform

Customer purchasesPlatform balanceVerified seller/creator earningsPlatform initiates payoutBeneficiary bank account

For a model like this, KeyBS Pay needs sufficient transparency into the business model, contractual relationships, payment flow, customer and beneficiary types, jurisdictions and the platform's own compliance controls. Each model is assessed individually — marketplace structures are not automatically accepted or declined.

KYC, KYB & EDD — frequently asked questions

What is KYC?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is the process of verifying the identity of the individuals connected to an account — such as beneficial owners, directors and authorised users — typically using government-issued photo identification and, where required, proof of address.

What is KYB?

KYB (Know Your Business) is the verification of the business itself: its legal existence, registration, ownership and control, activities, banking relationships, regulatory status and intended transaction activity.

What is the difference between KYC and KYB?

KYC verifies people; KYB verifies the company. A business application to KeyBS Pay involves both: KYB for the entity and KYC for its beneficial owners, directors and authorised users.

What documents are required for business KYB?

Typically: certificate of incorporation or registration, ownership and control information, identification for beneficial owners owning 25% or more, director and authorised-user identification, a bank letter or other approved banking confirmation, details of business activities and expected transactions, Source of Funds information, and applicable licences, registrations and tax identification information.

Is there a downloadable KYC and KYB checklist?

Yes. The official KeyBS Pay KYC and KYB Business Account Checklist (PDF, Version 1.0, August 2026) can be downloaded directly from this page. It covers company, ownership, banking, business, transaction, Source of Funds and regulatory documentation.

Who is considered a beneficial owner?

A beneficial owner is an individual who ultimately owns or controls the business — directly or indirectly. KeyBS Pay identifies and verifies beneficial owners owning 25% or more, together with relevant control-person information.

Does KeyBS Pay verify beneficial owners holding 25% or more?

Yes. Identification and ownership information is requested for all beneficial owners owning 25% or more of the entity, together with relevant control-person information.

What is Enhanced Due Diligence?

Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) is an additional level of review applied where the customer, ownership, business activity, jurisdiction or transaction profile presents elevated risk. It typically involves Source of Funds, Source of Wealth and further supporting documentation.

When does KeyBS Pay require EDD?

Source of Funds and Source of Wealth documentation is required if any one of the following applies: the business operates in a high-risk industry; the customer is a PEP or connected to a PEP; the entity is incorporated in a high-risk jurisdiction; the entity is operating in a high-risk jurisdiction; a beneficial owner holding over 25% resides in a high-risk jurisdiction; or a beneficial owner holding over 25% is 25 years old or younger.

What is Source of Funds?

Source of Funds (SoF) refers to the origins of money that an organisation uses to finance its operations. If no business activity, or information supporting business activity, is evident, KeyBS Pay may require further information and supporting documentation.

What is Source of Wealth?

Source of Wealth (SoW) refers to the origins of a client’s entire body of wealth (total assets) — establishing why the client has the assets they do and how they came to accumulate them. Where the client has been trading, accounts or corporate tax statements from the previous year would be expected.

What documents can prove Source of Funds?

Examples include business bank statements, audited or management accounts, contracts, customer or supplier invoices, investment documentation, sale agreements and tax filings. These are examples — acceptability is assessed case by case.

What documents can prove Source of Wealth?

Examples include annual accounts, corporate tax filings, investment evidence, sale-of-business documentation, property sale records, dividend evidence and employment or business income evidence.

Why might KeyBS Pay request a bank statement?

A business bank statement helps confirm the banking relationship, account ownership and the transaction activity described in the application — and can serve as Source of Funds evidence.

Can a high-risk business apply for KeyBS Pay?

Yes. Industries classified as high risk — such as cryptocurrency businesses, money service businesses or dealers in precious metals and stones — may still be assessed, but Source of Wealth and Source of Funds documentation is required and enhanced review applies. High-risk classification does not by itself mean the business is prohibited. Activities on the prohibited list cannot be onboarded.

What happens if my document is blurry or cropped?

Documents that are blurry, cropped, glared, very dark, expired or inconsistent with the application will likely require resubmission. All documents should be complete, current, legible and consistent with the information provided in the application.

Can API customers integrate before completing KYB?

Sandbox testing is available for development, but production access requires completed corporate KYB, funds-flow review and applicable compliance approval. The required structure depends on the proposed service, funds flow, jurisdictions, beneficiaries and regulatory model.

What information is required from payment platforms?

Platforms are typically asked for corporate KYB, ownership and licensing information, the full funds flow, customer and beneficiary types, countries, currencies, volumes, their own KYC/KYB and AML framework, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening approach, business model, terms of service and Source of Funds information.

What are nested payments?

Nested payments involve providing payment, account or safeguarding services to underlying customers of the account holder without KeyBS Pay's prior written approval and full look-through transparency. Platforms and intermediaries should describe their complete customer and funds flow during onboarding.

Does providing all documents guarantee account approval?

No. Submission of documents does not automatically guarantee account approval. KeyBS Pay may request additional information depending on risk profile, business activity, jurisdiction or transaction profile. Not every document will apply to every applicant.

Can KeyBS Pay request additional documentation?

Yes. KeyBS Pay may request additional information where required for compliance, risk assessment, verification or regulatory purposes — at any stage of onboarding or during the ongoing relationship.
