Paying business beneficiaries in China
China distinguishes between onshore renminbi (CNY), used for payments to mainland-China business beneficiaries, and offshore renminbi (CNH), used with Hong Kong and other offshore entities. Before paying a mainland supplier, collect the beneficiary’s legal entity name in Chinese and English, the bank name and branch, the account number, and a SWIFT/BIC or CNAPS code where the bank requires it, along with a matching invoice. Confirm whether the entity is mainland-China or Hong Kong, because the beneficiary details and settlement route differ.
