Every international payment form asks for it, every supplier bank-detail sheet includes it, and a single wrong character in it can send a payment on a week-long detour: the SWIFT code, formally the BIC. It is the addressing system for financial institutions — the postal code of global banking.

Decoding the 8–11 characters
A BIC reads like a compressed address. Consider DEUTDEFF500: the first four characters are the institution code (DEUT — Deutsche Bank), the next two are the ISO country code (DE — Germany), the next two are the location code (FF — Frankfurt), and the optional final three identify a branch (500). An 8-character BIC ends at the location and addresses the institution’s head office or main routing point; the 11-character form pinpoints a branch.
The standard is ISO 9362, and the registry is maintained by SWIFT itself — which is why "SWIFT code" and "BIC" refer to the same thing. Non-bank financial institutions have BICs too, and institutions not connected to the SWIFT network can hold non-connected BICs used purely for identification.
BIC vs IBAN vs routing number
The three identifiers answer different questions and coexist on most payment forms. The BIC answers "which institution?". The IBAN (in the 80+ countries using it) answers "which account?" — and actually embeds its own bank identification, which is why SEPA payments need only the IBAN. The US ABA routing number and similar national codes (UK sort codes, Chinese CNAPS codes, Nigerian bank codes) are domestic equivalents of the BIC’s routing role for their local rails.
The rule of thumb: international wires generally want BIC + account identifier (IBAN where applicable); domestic payments want the local routing format only. When a supplier’s bank-detail sheet lists all of them, use the pair appropriate to the rail your payment will actually travel.

How BIC errors stall payments
The classic failures are mundane: a branch BIC used where the head-office BIC is required (or vice versa), an outdated BIC after a bank merger, a code transcribed with a zero for the letter O, or a mismatch between the BIC and the account’s actual bank after the supplier changed institutions. Unlike IBANs, BICs carry no check digits, so software cannot mathematically validate them — a plausible-looking wrong BIC sails through the form and fails at a correspondent, sometimes days later, often with a repair fee deducted.
The defence is verification discipline: confirm bank details from a verified document, cross-check the BIC against the bank’s published code, and — for any new supplier — verify that the beneficiary name, account and bank all belong together before the first payment. Beneficiary verification catches both innocent errors and the far more expensive problem of invoice-fraud bank-detail swaps.

Is a SWIFT code the same as a BIC?

Do I need both a BIC and an IBAN?
For SEPA euro payments, the IBAN alone suffices. For most other international wires, provide both: the BIC routes to the institution, the IBAN or account number identifies the account.
What happens if I use the wrong SWIFT code?
